“Imitation of Life” follows the relationships between two single mothers and their daughters over a ten-year period as the girls grow up and their mothers’ careers develop. Beneath the outward mother-daughter conflicts are questions of love and loyalty tested by society’s conventions, personal ambitions and racial prejudice. “Without love you’re only living an imitation of life.”
